Scene of General Custer's last stand in Montana when he and 266 men of the 7th Cavalry met their deaths at the hands of larger forces of Sioux. The battle was the final move in a well‐planned strategy by the Sioux leader Crazy Horse, following the invasion of the Sioux Black Hills by White gold rush prospectors in violation of a treaty of 1868.
