(1885–1970), Australian-born RAF officer who became C-in-C Training Command in 1939 and helped initiate the successful British Empire Air Training Scheme. He then served as C-in-C Middle East Air Forces, but he incurred Churchill's displeasure on a number of counts and was summoned to London in May 1941 and replaced by his deputy, Tedder. He then served as inspector general of the RAF before retiring in 1942. He was knighted in 1942.
