(Vaughan Williams: Riders to the Sea). Cont. An old woman who has lost her husband and four sons to the sea. Her one remaining son, Bartley, insists on crossing the sea to take horses to Galway Fair. She sees a vision of him and his brother Michael, both riding horses, and realizes this means Bartley, too, will die. When he is drowned, it is almost a relief—now the sea can hurt her no more.
