The phenomenon observed in vitro in which low molecular weight compounds (e.g. nucleotides, ions) can be transferred from one cell to another through gap junctions. The phenomenon is also assumed to take place in vivo and the linkage of cells within a tissue will buffer the levels of metabolites and of ions and other signalling molecules.
