A transposon from Drosophila hydei that belongs to the Tc1 family of transposable elements (q.v.). Minos elements that carry foreign genes have been experimentally introduced into the germ line of Anopheles stephensi. This mosquito is a major carrier of malaria (q.v.) in urban areas of the Indian subcontinent. The success in producing transgenic mosquitoes using the Minos vector may eventually lead to the construction of genetically engineered strains of the insect that are resistant to infection by the malaria parasite.
