The phenomenon observed when pressure is reduced on a liquid or solid substance in which gases are dissolved or absorbed, releasing the gas into the environment. When the gas is toxic, irritant, or flammable (e.g., methane in a coal mine) the consequences can be dangerous or catastrophic for anyone in the environment. The term also describes emissions of volatile organic hydrocarbons, such as formaldehyde. from carpet adhesives, building materials, etc.
