King of Sri Lanka.1153–86. His violent life and times are recorded in the Sinhalese chronicle, the Cūlavaṃsa. After a turbulent period of political upheaval he suppressed a rebellion in Rohaṇa and became sole ruler. He sent forces to India to do battle with the Coḷas but later turned to more peaceful objectives including becoming a generous patron of Buddhism. He built many shrines and residencies for use by monks and united the three rival Buddhist groups of the Mahāvihāra.the Abhayagiri.and the Jetavana.
