A genus of trees that usually have bipinnate leaves. The flowers are in globular heads on long stalks held free from leaves, and are mostly nocturnal and bat-pollinated. Pods or seeds of some are eaten as a relish (petai). There are about 40 species, with a pantropical distribution.
