payback period

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The period required for a project to repay its initial outlay. This is usually projected on the assumption that any further recoveries are then pure profit. This is a relatively unsophisticated method of appraising a capital project (compare discounted cash flow; net present value), although it is frequently used in industry. See also internal rate of return.
