This is a document that describes the skills, knowledge, and qualities needed to perform a particular job. It is used in the recruitment process in order to translate the job requirements (specified in the job description) into tangible features that applicants need to demonstrate they possess in order to be deemed suitable for the vacancy. Typically, a person specification will outline the criteria that are (a) essential and (b) desirable, in terms of qualifications, experience, work-based competencies, and behaviour-based competencies. Using the person specification, it is possible for the managers involved in the selection process to decide upon the appropriate selection techniques to use in order to assess and compare the candidates.
