A feldspathic mineral that, at a high temperature, becomes glass. It is an essential ingredient in hard-paste porcelain which, when mixed with kaolin, provides hardness and translucency. The name derives from the Chinese baidunzi, meaning ‘little white bricks’, the form in which it was transported to the potters in China.
