A communication disorder characterized by failure to use appropriate speech sounds (such as pronouncing the word sea like she), the deficit interfering with scholastic, academic, or occupational achievement or social communication and not being due solely to mental retardation, a speech-motor or sensory deficit, or environmental deprivation. Also called articulation disorder. See also aphasia.
