Quick Reference

US modern dance company founded in 1971 by Moses Pendleton and Jonathan Wolken, fellow students at Dartmouth College. The company took its name from a phototropic fungus found in New England and it developed a form of sculptural dance theatre combining acrobatics, gymnastics, pantomime, and modern dance with striking visual effects and optical illusions. The dancers are all involved in the creative process, sometimes collaborating with outside artists such as puppeteer Basil Twist who co-created Darkness and Light (2008). Over the years, members have included Lee Harris, Michael Tracy, Robby Barnett, Martha Clarke, and Alison Chase. Tracy, Barnett, and Wolken are currently its artistic directors. Pilobolus is based in Washington, Connecticut and has evolved into a tripartite organization: the Dance Theatre, which performs up to three new productions each year, the Institute which runs educational programmes, and the Creative Services which works with commercial projects such as film and advertising. In 1997 the company made its Broadway debut and it tours extensively. A list of its works includes The Particle Zoo (1989), Solus (1992), Gnomen (1997), and Megawatt (2004).
