Ubiquitous family of damselflies whose members are characterized by having an almost rectangular discoidal cell in the wing venation, and only two postquadrilateral cells before the subnodus. The tibia of the middle and hind legs are often dilated, especially in the male. The nymphs are generally short and broad, with thickened tracheal gills. More than 200 extant species have been described.
