Quick Reference

A family of the Papovaviridae, DNA tumour viruses with a small circular genome. Polyomavirus, the only genus within the family, was isolated from mice; infection of adults is asymptomatic but experimental injection of high titres of the virus into neonatal mice causes histologically diverse tumours (hence poly-oma). Mouse cells are permissive for virus replication in vitro, and are killed, but hamster cells undergo abortive infection, and may become transformed.
