Quick Reference

(c.1742–1818) English actress, singer, and dancer, a protégée of Kitty Clive and her successor in low comic roles at Drury Lane. Pope's first appearance came as a young girl, acting in Garrick's Lilliput in 1756. In her early years, she was particularly admired for her pertness and vivacity in roles such as Beatrice in Much Ado and the title role in Colman the Elder's Polly Honeycomb. She was the original Miss Stirling in the Colman–Garrick Clandestine Marriage and Mrs Candour in Sheridan's The School for Scandal. Later in her career (spent almost entirely at Drury Lane), she excelled in duenna roles.
