Quick Reference

(b Milan, c.1455; d after 1508).

Milanese painter. He was court painter to Ludovico Sforza and worked mainly as a portraitist, but he is chiefly remembered for his association with Leonardo da Vinci, for whom he worked as assistant on the Virgin of the Rocks (NG, London). The wings of this altarpiece, depicting angels with musical instruments, are of much lower quality than the centre panel and are presumed to be by Ambrogio and/or his elder half-brother Evangelista dePredis (d1490/1). The National Gallery also has two portraits attributed to Ambrogio (one of them dated 1494), showing a rather wooden imitation of Leonardo's style.
