proteolipid protein

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Highly conserved tetraspanin membrane proteins that account for about half of the protein content of adult central nervous system myelin (compare protein zero). Proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1, 276 aa) has an alternatively spliced isoform, DM20, and another form, PLP2, has also been described. The cellular function is unclear, although it may be purely structural, but mutations are lethal. See Pelizaeus–Merzbacher disease.
