Quick Reference

A nominal list of officers and men in a warship which gave the action station of every man on board when the ship went into battle. It was the origin of the naval order to ‘beat to quarters’ where the drummers aboard a sailing man-of-war beat to a particular rhythm, ‘Heart of Oak’, to indicate that men must go to their battle stations. See also watch-bill.
