rectus abdominis

One of a pair of medial, superficial, abdominal muscles that extend from their proximal attachment of the costal cartilage of ribs 5–7 to their distal attachment on the pubis. The rectus abdomini flex and rotate the lumbar region of the spine, fix and depress the ribs, stabilize the pelvis during walking, and increase intra-abdominal pressure.
