Quick Reference

American rebels from inland North Carolina who felt aggrieved at the political control of the aristocrats over the coastal region. They turned to violence when legal action failed to increase their representation and reduce their taxation. “The Regulation”, centred in Orange County, attacked magistrates and lawyers until it was overwhelmed by the militia under Governor Tryon at the Battle of the Alamance. Antagonisms between coastal and frontier settlers were not uncommon, as Bacon's, Culpeper's, and Shays's rebellions demonstrated.
