Quick Reference

On the expulsion of the kings from Rome (see rex) their sacral functions were partially assumed by a priest called rex sacrorum ‘the king for sacred rites’ (and his wife, the rēgīna, ‘queen’). He sacrificed on the Kalends, and on the Nones he announced the days of festivals (see calendar, roman). He ranked first among priests, but was subordinate to the pontifex maximus. He served for life, and might hold no other post.
