Under section 25 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, the admissions procedures of maintained schools are subject to the scrutiny and ruling of adjudicators appointed by the Secretary of State. Since 2007 the adjudicators may also direct schools to admit a pupil who has been excluded from, or refused admission by, every suitable school locally; and to direct the admission of looked‐after children. They do not, however, act on complaints from individual parents. See also choice.
