The second treatment that is provided at a wastewater treatment plant, in which bacteria consume suspended organic matter in the waste that remains from the primary treatment of sewage. This process removes only limited amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus, which must be removed by advanced wastewater treatment. Also known as secondary wastewater treatment.
