poet and short‐story writer, born and raised in Jamaica and educated at Carleton University, Ottawa; she divides her time between Jamaica and Canada. Her collections of poetry, Talking of Trees (1985) and Gardening in the Tropics (1994), employ a wide range of voices, from the colloquial and the conversational to the prophetic, to explore the struggles and history of her land and its people. Her volumes of short stories include Summer Lightning (1986), Arrival of the Snake Woman (1989), and Discerner of Hearts (1995).
