A form genus of fungi that produce thread-like, septate conidia. There are many species, some of which are important plant pathogens (e.g. S. nodorum (Leptosphaeria nodorum) causes glume blotch in cereals, S. oxyspora (Selenophoma donacis) causes halo spot in cereals, and S. apiicola causes leaf spot of celery).
