A religious order founded by seven wealthy Florentine city councillors who abandoned their positions to devote themselves to the service of the BVM, traditionally in 1233. They adopted the Rule of St Augustine, with some additions from the Dominican constitutions. The Order developed rapidly after it had been officially sanctioned by Benedict XI in 1304.
