(Janáček: From the House of the Dead). Bar. A prisoner who tells his story: he was forced to marry a girl who had reputedly been seduced by one Filka Morozov. On their wedding night he discovered she was a virgin and he was full of remorse. She later told him she did love Morozov and had an affair with him after they were married. In his humiliation, he killed her. Now, in the prison, he recognizes the dying Luka as Filka Morozov and curses his body as it is carried out. Created (1930) by Géza Fischer.
