(1962– ),

novelist and writer of short stories, born in Inverness. Her first novel, Like (1997), was followed by Hotel World (2001), which tells the interweaving story of five characters whose lives (and, in one case, death) converge one night at the Global Hotel; it is a playful and dark portrait of lives, afterlives, and loneliness. The novel received high critical acclaim, as did her next novel, The Accidental (2005, Whitbread Novel Award), which sees 12‐year‐old Astrid and her family holidaying in Norfolk; mysterious Amber walks into the story and causes all manner of unexpected change. Smith has also written three collections of short stories: Free Love and Other Stories (1995), Other Stories and Other Stories (1999), and The Whole Story and Other Stories (2003).
