WPP Group. At Saatchi & Saatchi (1975–86), Sorrell, as Finance Director, was the architect of the agency's massive acquisitions. He joined WPP in 1986. There he began to acquire below-the-line advertising-related companies and in 1987 made a $566 m hostile takeover of J Walter Thompson Co. Sorrell followed this in 1989 with another dramatic hostile $825 m buy of Ogilvy & Mather. Today, WPP is one of the world's larger marketing service/advertising groups with more than 40 companies in 83 nations.
