Quick Reference
In soils, for engineering computations, grains are weighed in a calibrated glass container (pycnometer), carefully excluding air, to relate the mass of the sample to its volume. The specific gravity of solid rocks can be determined using a Walker balance, and can be carried out on dry or water-saturated samples. See also density determination.
