s-process

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A process in nucleosynthesis in which a nucleus captures a neutron and will probably undergo beta decay before capturing another neutron. The s-process (‘slow process’) occurs if there is a steady but not large supply of neutrons from nuclear fusion reactions in stars. Many elements that are heavier than iron are produced by the s-process.
