An Arhat. A minor figure in the early tradition, declared to be the chief among the disciples who dwell in remote places (araṇavihārin). He becomes much more important in Mahāyāna Buddhism where he appears as chief interlocutor in many sūtras.particularly in the early Perfection of Insight (Prajñā-pāramitā) literature. There he is depicted as a wise Bodhisattva who confounds the early disciples with his profound understanding of the doctrine of emptiness (śūnyatā).
