A specialized intercellular junction that resists mechanical disruption. The membranes of the two cells are separated by 15–25 nm (compare zonula occludens), and microfilaments are attached at the cytoplasmic face by their plus ends. The junction resembles two apposed focal adhesions, although the proteins involved may differ.
