A non‐departmental public body of the Department for Children, Schools, and Families, launched in 2000 by the Department for Education and Employment to develop the leadership skills of existing and aspiring school leaders. It offers a range of professional development programmes for head teachers, deputy head teachers, and others with leadership responsibilities, and provides online learning through its virtual learning environment, the Learning Gateway. It also supports research into effective leadership with a view to influencing policy and practice. See also headship development.
