Used as a measure of relative potency or biological activity of substances, such as vitamins, before techniques were available to measure them by weight or molarity. Still sometimes used (3.33 iu vitamin A = 1 µg; 40 iu vitamin D = 1 µg; 1 iu vitamin E = 1 mg).
