The world governing body of astronomy, founded in 1919 to foster international cooperation in astronomical research. The IAU has its headquarters in Paris and holds a general assembly at different locations every three years. It appoints commissions on various aspects of astronomy, which consider matters concerning international agreements and standardization, including the naming of celestial bodies and features. The IAU organizes the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams and the Minor Planet Center.
