A non-governmental organization that advances and disseminates knowledge about space and the development and application of space assets to benefit humanity. Established in 1951, the IAF in 2004 had 162 members from government organizations, industry, professional associations, and societies in 45 countries. The IAF organizes international symposia, workshops, and events. These include an annual Space Workshop for Developing Nations, organized with the United Nations (UN); space seminars at UN meetings; and an International Astronautical Congress, hosted each year by a different nation. The Congress is organized with the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Institute of Space Law, which the IAF founded in 1960. Its permanent secretariat is in Paris, France.
