In 1292 Edward I placed John Balliol on the throne of Scotland. Two years later, when war broke out between Edward and Philip IV of France, Edward called on Balliol to give him support. But a number of Scottish barons sent to France and on 23 October 1295 signed a treaty of mutual assistance which became the basis for the long‐lasting Franco‐Scottish alliance, the ‘Auld Alliance’.
