The first widely used web browser. Created by a team led by Marc Andreessen at the University of Illinois National Center for Supercomputing Applications and released in 1993, it was easy to install and reliable in operation. Readily usable by non-specialists, it is credited with a crucial role in the popularization and explosive growth of the Web in the 1990s. It became the model for subsequent web browsers.
