1 The depth to which a bullet or other projectile will penetrate a material before exploding or coming to rest.
2 The insertion of a part of the body or anything else into the vagina, anus, or mouth of another. Penile penetration of those orifices without consent constitutes the actus reus of rape. Penetration of the vagina or anus is the basis of the offence of assault by penetration. Section 79(2) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 provides that penetration is a continuing act from entry to withdrawal. It follows that an accused can commit the offences if consent is withdrawn and he does not withdraw immediately.
