A dictatorship run in the interests of foreign commercial exploitation. The term originates as a description of Latin American countries (such as Honduras, Costa Rica, and Guatamala) in the early twentieth century. Foreign fruit‐trading companies (such as the United Fruit Company) used corruption and bribery to control the government, in order to protect agricultural interests and provide an infrastructure which suited their commercial requirements.
