Ballet in one act with choreography by MacMillan, music by Shostakovich, and designs by Jürgen Rose. Premiered 30 Nov. 1966 by the Berlin Opera Ballet, with Carli, Kapuste, Seymour, Holz, and Kesselheim. A plotless ballet set to Shostakovich's 2nd Piano Concerto, Op. 102, it was MacMillan's first creation as director of the Berlin company. It was subsequently revived for American Ballet Theatre and the Royal Ballet touring company in 1967. It has entered the repertory of several other companies, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Australian Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet.
