Quick Reference

A one-dimensional object used in theories of elementary particles and in cosmology (cosmic string). String theory replaces the idea of a pointlike elementary particle (used in quantum field theory) by a line or loop (a closed string). States of a particle may be produced by standing waves along this string. The combination of string theory with supersymmetry leads to superstring theory.
