1 The act or process of turning round. In psychoanalysis, a defence mechanism whereby an instinctual aim changes into its opposite, usually from an active to a passive form, as when sexual sadism turns to sexual masochism or voyeurism to exhibitionism (1). Also called reversal into the opposite.
