The original name for a crewed spacecraft. It was more appropriate at first because of the thimble shape and the limited room inside a spacecraft. US astronaut Michael Collins said that by the time he joined the space programme in 1963, astronauts detested the word and ‘spacecraft’ was always used: ‘A capsule was something you swallowed.’
