A southern constellation representing the keel of the ship Argo Navis. It contains the second-brightest star in the sky, Canopus (Alpha Carinae). Another bright star is Beta Carinae (Miaplacidus). Eta Carinae is a unique variable star embedded in the nebula NGC 3372. Major star clusters include NGC 2516 and NGC 3532, and also IC 2602, sometimes called the Southern Pleiades.
