(1775–1850) privateer, shipbuilder, and state legislator, born on Queen's Creek, Onslow County, North Carolina. Burns was North Carolina's most famous privateer; during the War of 1812 he commanded the fast schooner Snap Dragon on three successful voyages, raiding British shipping from Nova Scotia to Brazil.
