Census returns are used to construct aggregate statistics concerning a wide range of characteristics such as economic, social, health, education, often grouped by geographical region, gender, age, etc. The name derives from the way they are compiled as counts from a large number of individual census returns. Other examples of aggregate statistics include indices such as the retail price index.
