A gene in Drosophila (located at 2-54) which produces a transcript that is localized at the posterior pole of the embryo. The cad gene is essential for the development of the hindgut. It encodes a protein 472 amino acids long that contains a homeodomain (q.v.). This protein (CAD) activates the transcription of various target genes, including fushi tarazu (q.v.).
